After losing this seat twice, in 1957 and 1989, it has been the Congress all the way. In fact, even in 1989, the Congress lost to the JD by just 3 %. In 1996, when the saffron brigade mounted its biggest challenge ever, the Congress managed to hold on to the seat by 18,000 votes.
