In 1989 the Congress's three-time MP U B Rathod defeated the BJP's Naganathrao; in 1991, Naganathrao repaid the compliment, but this time as the Sena candidate. The Sena retained the seat in 1996, defeating the Bahujan Mahasangh by almost 70,000 votes.
