The first time the BJP made inroads into this constituency was in 1989, when S M Sukaji defeated two-time MP Vilas Muttemwar (Congress). Muttemwar returned in 1991, defeating Sukaji convincingly. In 1996, Muttemwar was defeated by almost 110,000 votes.
