In 1977 lawyer Ram Jethmalani was elected from here on the BLD ticket, and retained the seat on the JP ticket in 1980 despite the Indira wave. In 1984, actor Sunil Dutt made his parliamentary debut from here, defeating the BJP's Jethmalani, and kept the seat in the 1989 and 1991 elections. In 1996 Madhukar Sarpotdar, who was intercepted by the army during the Bombay riots with weapons on him, became the Shiv Sena's MP, defeating former Congress mayor Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar by almost 90,000 votes.
