Elections 98
In 1977, Ahilya Rangnekar -- Marxist legend Bal Trimbak Ranadive's sister -- bagged the seat for the CPI-M, and in 1980 Pramila Dandavate won the seat on a Janata Party ticket, before the seat reverting to the Congress's Sharad Dighe. In 1971, the losing Shiv Sena candidate was Manohar Joshi, currently chief minister of Maharashtra. Joshi in fact took one more shot at parliamentary elections in 1984, and again lost to the Congress. In 1989, the Sena won the seat for the first time, before the Congress wrested back 18 months later. In 1996 the Sena took back the seat, defeating the Congress by a huge margin of almost 90.000 votes. |
