Elections 98
Veteran Communist Shripad Amrut Dange was the first MP from here, in 1957, so that should explain the constituency's leanings. Given the strong mill presence in this constituency, the candidates always had a strong labour background. Dange lost the next election, but returned in 1967. In 1984, the MP was Datta Samant, contesting as an Independent, coming in second was another independent, Dange's daughter Roza Deshpande. In 1991, the Shiv Sena first made its presence felt in the large labour belt, when Mohan Rawale was elected, the MP who rose to fame as the man who voted to save the P V Narasimha Rao government despite the party whip ordering to do otherwise. Rawale was renominated in 1996, and he defeated the Samajwadi Party's Datta Samant by almost 60,000 votes. The Congress's Ishaq Jamkhanwala came in third. |
