In 1967 and 1971, this was Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait's constituency but after that the Muslim League lost steam, and the seat has been held by the Congress and the CPI-M. In 1996, sitting Congress MP K Murleedharan -- K Karunakaran's son -- was defeated by the Janata Dal's Veerendra Kumar, the newspaper (Mathrubhumi) baron and minister in the Gujral government.
