Fiery George Fernandes won from here at the height of the Janata wave in 1977, and managed to retain it even in 1980 when all over the Janata Party was being the shown the door. He re-entered the fray in 1989, and retained the seat in 1991, but his percentage of votes in the same period had come down from 68.9 to 50.7. Surprisingly, then, in 1996, his party, the Samata Party, was defeated by the Janata Dal candidate Captain Jai Narain Nishad, the former naval officer who was appointed a minister in the United Front government.
