Backward Muslims demand LS tickets from Congress

The All-India Backward Muslim Congress today criticised the Congress leadership for ignoring backward Muslims while distributing party tickets for the Lok Sabha election.

AIBMC president Shakilur Rahman said in a statement in New Delhi today that the conspiracy was so deep-rooted that even MPs from the backward Muslim community had been denied tickets.

Citing the example of Char Ghubri constituency in Assam, he said the member who held this seat in the outgoing Lok Sabha was not renominated.

Rahman appealed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to immediately consider giving party tickets to backward Muslim candidates.

He said not a single backward Muslim was given a ticket for the Lok Sabha election in Bihar despite the fact that this section alone constitutes 16 per cent of the state's electorate.
