Pollard's all-round show gives Mumbai victory

Mumbai Indians finally won their maiden Pepsi Indian Premier Legue title, upstaging Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs in the final, at the Eden Gardens, in Kolkata, on Sunday.

Kieron Pollard blasted 60 from 32 balls to help Mumbai Indians recover from a poor start and post a competitive 148 for nine in their 20 overs.

In reply, Chennai could manage only 125 for nine, despite captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni scoring 63 from 45 balls.

Mumbai elected to bat

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat.

Both teams went in with unchanged line-ups from the previous match

Sachin Tendulkar again missed out because of injury.

Mohit strikes early

Mohit Sharma provided Chennai the early breakthrough, claiming the wicket of Mumbai opener Dwayne Smith.

Smith scored four before he was trapped leg before wicket in the first over of the innings.

Morkel's double strike lifts Chennai

Albie Morkel struck with his first delivery of the match. Aditya Tare was out for a duck; he played over a full delivery but missed and was bowled.

In his next over, Morkel had Rohit Sharma (2) caught off his own bowling, leaving Mumbai reeling at 16 for three in the fourth over.

 

Karthik out for 21

Dinesh Karthik tried to build the innings as he played a patient knock of 21 from 26 balls.

He was dismissed by Chris Morris as he chipped down the track to the pacer but missed and was bowled, as Mumbai continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Rayudu, Pollard rally Mumbai

Ambati Rayudu rallied Mumbai in a good partnership with Pollard in the middle overs.

Rayudu scored a steady 37 from 36 balls, hitting four boundaries, putting on 48 runs for the fifth wicket to put the Mumbai innings back on track.

Pollard's fifty boosts Mumbai

Pollard changed the script in the final few overs with his power hitting despite wickets falling at the other end.

The bulky West Indian ended the innings in grand style with two successive sixes from the last two deliveries to finish on 60 from 32 balls and lift Mumbai to 148 for nine.

Bravo shines with the ball

Dwayne Bravo took two wickets in the final over to finish with four for 42 in four overs.

The Chennai all-rounder finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with a rich haul of 32 wickets from 18 games.

Malinga mauls Chennai

Mumbai Indians adopted a new strategy for a change and showed their attacking intent. Lasith Malinga was given the new ball and the Lankan pacer made immediate impact.

Malinga had Hussey bowled out with a fast yorker and the very next delivery Suresh Raina fended a short ball to leg gully to be dismissed for a first ball duck.

Chennai batsmen unable to face MI's attacking bowlers

Then Chennai were reeling at 5 for 3 when Mitchell Johnson had S Badrinath caught behind by Karthik for a duck.

Both pacemen had the Chennai batsmen in a tizzy as they bowled tight and the runs dried up.

Johnson got into the act again, this time as a fielder when he held a catch on mid-on to dismiss Bravo off the bowling of Rishi Dhawan.

Dhoni fights till the end

While wickets kept tumbling at the other end CSK captain MS Dhoni tried to launch a counter-attack. But his efforts were in vain as none of his temmates gave him any support at the other end and Mumbai Indian won the IPL 6 final by 23 runs.
