Steyn struck in the first over
Delhi Daredevils crashed to a fourth straight defeat, losing by three wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League match at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Friday.
Batting first, after winning the toss for the first time, the home team scored 114 for eight.
The very impressive Dale Steyn struck with his fourth ball, having David Warner (0) caught by Anand Rajan at mid-on. It was a wicket maiden.
He almost had Mahela Jayawardene the next ball, but Parthiv Patel grassed the tough chance. The South African returned to shatter Shahbaz Nadeem's stumps and finished with figures of two for 11.
Besides, he also hit the winning boundary. However, he missed out on the man-of-the-match award.
Ishant took two wickets
Ishant Sharma provided good support to Steyn.
In his second over, the ex-Delhi bowler removed Mahela Jayawardene (12) and Virender Sehwag (12) in successive balls.
Concerned by the low run-rate, Jayawardene went for a big shot but miscued and found Steyn at mid-on, while Sehwag was caught brilliantly by Cameron White in the slip region.
However, an expensive last over, that cost Hyderabad 17 runs, spoilt his overall figures (4-0-35-2).
Sehwag made just 12
Delhi must have expected an inspiring start from Virender Sehwag after electing to bat but the out-of-favour India opener could not help the side, looking for its first win after three defeats.
His contribution was just 12 runs as Delhi top-order failed again.
Jadhav top-scored for Delhi
Kedar Jadhav, who is in India's probables list for the Champion Trophy, was the only batsman who batted with purpose, top scoring with an unbeaten 30 off 20 balls.
Jadhav's 30-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Irfan Pathan (23) was the highest for the hosts, which put on board the second lowest total of the season so far.
Perera struck twice
Thisara Perera also impressed with the ball for Hyderabad, taking two for 31.
The Sri Lankan took the wickets of Irfan (23) and Morne Morkel (0) in the space of three balls.
Botha bowled a tight line
Johan Botha failed with bat, making nine off just 14 balls.
The South African though more than made up for it with an economic spell (3-0-11-1) and contributed in the field as well taking two important catches.
Botha took the vital wicket of Hyderabad skipper Kumar Sangakkara.
Sangakkara top-scored with 28
Hyderabad batsmen were far from comfortable in their chase and almost gifted Delhi their first win. Runs did not come easy for the visitors and they too lost wickets at regular intervals to keep Delhi in hunt.
Skipper Sangakkara (28) and Parthiv Patel (19) settled the innings after early loss of Akshath Reddy, putting on 45 runs for the second wicket.
But both fell in quick succession, Sangakkara giving a single catch to Virender Sehwag at first slip off Johan Botha.
Nadeem was Delhi's best bowler
Shahbaz Nadeem was the pick of the Delhi bowlers, with figures of two for 17.
The spinner first caught Parthiv Patel in his follow through and then had Cameron White (4) stumped.
Morkel impressed with the ball
Morne Morkel was impressive as well picking up two for 27 in his four overs.
The South African first had Hanuma Vihari (17) caught by Johan Botha and returned to rattle Ashish Reddy's stumps.
Morkel's twin blows reduced Hyderabad to 89 for six with less than four overs to go.
Mishra delivered with the ball...and the bat
The fortunes kept fluctuating in the low-scoring thriller but eventually Hyderabad huffed and puffed to win with four balls to spare.
It became a battle of nerves for the both the sides and Amit Mishra (16) and Dale Styen (9) steered their side home, with the latter finishing the match with a crushing straight drive off Irfan Pathan.
Mishra, who had also bowled well (4-0-15-1), pipped Steyn to the man of the match award.
