However, just when Gambhir looked to have settled down, he gave his wicket away, hitting a Tredwell delivery straight to Joe Root at mid on.
Gambhir's 53-ball knock was inclusive of four boundaries.
Kohli albeit continued to impressive, scoring a matc winning 77 not out, his 79-ball knock was inclusive of nine boundaries and two sixes.
The 24-year-old, when on 49, became the second youngest player to score 4,000 ODI runs after West Indies legend Viv Richards.
He proceeded to score his 22nd ODI fifty, his third against England, and put on 66 runs in just eight overs for the third wicket with Yuvraj Singh (30) to seal the visitor's fate.
