The right-handed batsman wrote his name in record books as he became only the third cricketer after compatriots Sachin Tendulkar (200) and Virender Sehwag (219) to score a double hundred in ODIs.
Sharma smashed 209 from 158 balls in the deciding ODI against Australia at Bangalore on Saturday.
Sharma hit the first two balls of the last over for six but was caught at deep square leg off the third, leaving Virender Sehwag's 219 as the record.
The Mumbai lad hit the most number of sixes in an ODI innings.
His 16 sixes broke Shane Watson's record of 15 in an ODI innings.
Sharma also crossed the 1,000-run mark in 2013 in the course of Saturday's innings.
Rohit Sharma's 209 is the highest individual score at Bangalore. He went past Andrew Strauss, who made 158 during the 2011 WC match against India.
Sharma now has the highest score by any batsmen against Australia. When he reached 176, he went past Sachin Tendulkar and Hershcelle Gibbs for the highest individual score against Australia.
