Windies in sight of victory

West Indies' march to only their second win in 19 matches was held up by Asim Kamal and Shahid Afridi as Pakistan ended the third day of the first Test in dire straits, on 113 for four, in Barbados on Saturday.

Left with the unenviable task of scoring 573 runs to win the match or bat out for seven sessions for a draw, Pakistan's frail batting was exposed again as they lost four wickets in the final session and were reduced to 16 for three at one stage.

Salman Butt and Younis Khan went for ducks and Yasir Hameed (11) and Bazid Khan (23) even though West Indies lost pacer Fidel Edwards, who had a first innings haul of 5-38, to a hamstring injury.

Edwards went off having had Butt caught behind and after bowling just eight deliveries but the other pacers carried on the good work done by skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

He remained unbeaten on 153 after scoring his 14th Test hundred to put his team in command before they were bowled out at the stroke of tea for 371 runs.

West Indies had taken a first innings lead of 201 runs after bowling out Pakistan for 144 on the second day.

Chanderpaul, who was out for 92 in the first innings, guided his team to a position of strength in a fourth wicket stand of 134 with Wavell Hinds (52) in the morning session.

GREAT EFFORT

Pakistan were left with the task of scoring the highest ever total in the second innings to win a match.

Butt was out in the first over beaten by a sharp inswinging delivery from Edwards to be caught in the slips where Chris Gayle brought off a great effort.

With the total on just two runs, captain Younis Khan was run out when he was sent back by Yasir after going for a single only to be beaten by a direct throw from Chanderpaul in the covers.

Yasir was then beaten by a beautiful length ball from Darren Powell who got the outside edge for keeper Courtney Browne to take a comfortable catch.

Bazid hit two elegant fours through the off side to race to 23 from 24 balls and push the total along when light showers caused a half-hour delay.

He was trapped leg before by Corey Collymore immediately after play resumed facing just two balls to leave Pakistan tottering on 47 for 4.

Kamal, who faced 64 balls and hit five fours and one six, and Afridi (32 from 29 balls) than stopped the rot with some daring strokes to put on 66 runs.

West Indies' only win in their last 19 matches was against Bangladesh in June 2004.
