December 03, 2002 22:26 IST

The West Indies beat Bangladesh by 86 runs in the third and final match to win the one-day series between the countries 2-0.

Chasing a formidable West Indies total of 281 runs, Bangladesh scored 195 for nine wickets in the 50-over day-night match at Dhaka's Bangabandhu National stadium.

The West Indies had won the second match of the series by 84 runs on Monday. The opening game was rained out.

Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels hit classy half-centuries to help the West Indies pile up 281 for five in 50 overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, the West Indies lost Wavel Hinds (16), bowled by Tapash Baisya, with the
scoreboard reading 46. However, a 108-run second wicket partnership off 147 balls between Gayle and Samuels saw the visitors reach 154 in 32 overs. Gayle was then caught behind by Bangladesh captain and wicketkeeper Khaled Masud for 73 runs.

Ramnaresh Sarwan, who hit his maiden century in the second one-dayer on Monday, scored 28 before being caught by Mohammad Rafique off Naimur Rahman.

Samuels took the score to 208 before he was bowled by Rafique for 77. Captain Ridley Jacobs contributed 23 runs before he was run-out.

While Bangladesh's top order batsmen failed, medium pacer Alok Kapali waged a lone battle as he remained 89 not out off 93 balls.

Debutante opener Anwar Hossain made a tedious 42 before he was caught by Wavel Hinds off Darren Powell.

Man-of-the-match Vasbert Drakes claimed four wickets for 33 runs. He was also judged man-of-the-series.
