Vijay Hazare C'ship: Rasool's effort in vain as Punjab beat J&K

Punjab's bowlers made up for a poor performance by the team's batsman to beat Jammu and Kashmir by 49 runs in a low-scoring, weather-truncated North Zone leg encounter of the Vijay Hazare National One-day Championship in Dharamsala on Sunday.

Restricted to 168 for eight in 23 overs after being put into bat, Punjab bowled out J&K for 120 in 20.4 overs.

It was a spectacular batting collapse as Punjab went from 102 for one to 168 for eight but it didn't hurt the team much as J&K also crumbled.

Opener Ravinder Singh was the batting star for Punjab with a 41-ball 60, studded with half a dozen fours and a couple of sixes.

His partner Chandan Mohan was the other decent contributor, making 38 off 45 deliveries that comprised four fours.

For J&K, Parveez Rasool and Ramdyal Punia grabbed two wickets apiece in a fine effort. Rasool then came good with the bat as well, striking a 34-ball 33 which included four boundaries.

But J&K were let down by their other batsmen, who failed miserably.

India star Yuvraj Singh, who made a nought with the bat, more than made up for it with the ball, picking up three wickets in three overs for Punjab.

Gujarat thump Baroda by 6 wkts

Smit Patel and Manprit Juneja struck a half century each as Gujarat scored an easy six-wicket victory over Baroda in the West Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy One-day Championship in Pune on Sunday.

Smit Patel (88 not out from 115 balls) and Manprit (58 off 88 balls) shared 107 runs from 21.5 overs for the third wicket as Gujarat chased down the target of 225 with eight balls to spare.

Gujarat lost their captain Parthiv Patel (5) in the second over when the team total was just five but recovered soon.

Smit Patel struck six fours in his unbeaten knock as he guided Gujarat to 227 for four while Manprit hit three boundaries.

Baroda used as many as eight bowlers but only two of them could take wickets with Sunit Singh grabbing two for 64 from his 10 overs. Lukman Meriwala took one wicket for 26.

Earlier, Baroda squandered a good start and could only post 224 for nine after being sent into bat. No 3 batsman Aditya Waghmode top-scored with 66 while Rakesh Solanki chipped in with an unbeaten 43. Captain Yusuf Pathan was run out for just one run.

Openers Saurabh Wakaskar and Aditya Reddy put on 54 runs for the first wicket from 11 overs before the latter was out. Gujarat later lost way and lost wickets at regular intervals to end their innings at 224 for nine.

Rush Kalaria got three wickets for 42 runs while Akshar Patel grabbed two for 34. Ishwar Chaudhary and Jesal Karia chipped in with one wicket each.

Karnataka register seven-wicket win over TN

Karnataka registered a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Tamil Nadu in a South Zone leg encounter of the Vijay Hazare National One-Day Championship in Vasco, Goa, on Sunday.

Opting to bat, Tamil Nadu scored a competitive 250 for eight, which Karnataka batsmen chased down comfortably in 45.2 overs, losing just three wickets in the process.

Tamil Nadu did not have an ideal start and they were reeling at 84 for four at one stage, but Dinesh Karthik (84) and Vijay Shankar (59) came to the team's rescue.

The duo consolidated the innings, putting on a 142-run stand for the fifth wicket to take the score past 200-run mark.

When Shankar finally fell, after playing a valuable knock that came off 73 balls, laced with two fours and a six, Tamil Nadu were in control at 227 for five.

Karthik, was however quick to join his partner in the dressing room. His 87-ball 84 included four hits to the fence and three sixes.

Thereafter none of the batsmen could make an impression.

For Karnataka, Abhimanyu Mithun was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 49, while HS Sharath (2/45) and Stuart Binny (2/56) chipped in with two wickets each.

In reply, Karnataka always looked in total control even as the TN bowlers looked lacklustre.

Manish Pandey (81) and Karun Nair (64) scored half-century each, besides sharing an unbeaten 123-run partnership for the fourth wicket to reach 252 for three with 28 balls to spare.

Opener Robin Uthappa (49) and Ganesh Satish (35) also contributed with the bat.

Mumbai thrash Saurashtra by 126 runs

Siddhesh Lad slammed an unbeaten 91-ball 115 while pacer Kshemal Waingankar shone with a five-wicket haul as Mumbai thrashed Saurashtra by 126 runs in their Vijay Hazare Trophy (West Zone) match, in Pune on Sunday.

Sent in to bat, Mumbai rode on Lad's pyrotechnics and Shoaib Shaikh's 72 to post a challenging 283 for seven in their alloted 50 overs before bundling out Saurashtra for a paltry 157 in 41.5 overs at Poona Club Ground.

Saurashtra kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as barring Chirag Jani's 79-ball 61, none other batsmen could hang around for long.

If Mumbai skipper Ajit Agarkar rocked the top-order with four for 19 in his nine overs, Waingankar polished off the middle and lower order with his swing and bounce to finish with five for 42.

Apart from Jani, Pratik Mehta struck a 43-ball 32 as eight Saurashtra batsmen failed to touch the double-digit mark.

Earlier, Mumbai were in a spot of bother at 68 for three but Lad and Shaikh steadied the sinking ship with a 78-run stand for the fourth wicket.

After the fall of Shaikh, Mumbai lost three quick wickets but Lad stitched two useful partnerships with Iqbal Abdulla (17) and Ankeet Chavan (18) to guide the team to a competitive total.

Lad struck seven fours and six sixes during his knock while Shaikh hit seven fours and two sixes.

For Saurashtra, Jaydev Unadkat and Kuldeep Raval picked up two wickets each.

Khatri, Gajendra spin Rajasthan to comprehensive victory

Madhur Khatri and Gajendra Singh grabbed four wickets each to spin Rajasthan to a crushing 78-run victory over Vidarbha in the Central Zone leg of the Vijay Hazare Trophy One-Day Championship in Indore on Sunday.

Off-spinner Khatri (4/25) and left-arm spinner Gajendra (4/28) wrecked havoc on Vidarbha batsmen who were shot out for 130 in 43 overs while chasing 209 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium.

Right-arm pacer Gajendra chipped in with two for 14.

The pathetic show by Vidarbha batsmen rendered pacer Shrikant Wagh's impressive six for 42 go in vain. Wagh's fine effort was instrumental in Vidarbha shooting Rajasthan out for 208.

Chasing 209 for a win, Akshay Kolhar top-scored with 35 as Vidarbha suffered a batting collapse as they were reduced to 94 for seven in the 31st over from 62 for one in the 16th over.

Earlier, Rajasthan were 208 all out after being sent into bat with lower-order batsman Raman Chahar top-scoring with 43 while Gajendra Singh chipped in with an unbeaten 37.

Rajasthan also suffered a batting collapse and from 41 for two in the eighth over, they were reduced to 61 for six in the 15th over.

A 65-run stand for the seventh wicket between Chahar and Khatri and later a 60-run partnership for the last wicket between Gajendra and Manjeet Singh took Rajasthan to 208 all out in 46 overs.

Shrikant Wagh grabbed six wickets for 42 overs in his 10 overs. Sandeep Singh, Amol Jungade and Faiz Fazal got a wicket each.
