Australia win VB series

January 25, 2003 17:54 IST

Australia wrapped up the triangular one-day series finals on Saturday by beating England by five runs after a tense finish.

Set a modest 230 to win in the second of the best-of-three series, England faltered against some more fine fast bowling by Brett Lee and were dismissed for 224.

England, thrashed by 10 wickets in the first final, looked to be coasting to victory as Michael Vaughan and Alec Stewart scored 60 apiece.

But they fell apart when Lee returned to the attack to lose their 13th consecutive one-day match against the world champions. Lee finished with five for 30 from 9.3 overs.

Earlier, Australia's middle order failed miserably against Andy Caddick (2-23) and Ronnie Irani (3-46) and slumped to 98 for four before ending with 229 for seven.
