England's Michael Vaughan moved to the head of the PricewaterhouseCooper Test batting ratings after Australian Matthew Hayden slipped up with two low scores in the nine-wicket defeat of the West Indies in Guyana last weekend.

Opener Vaughan, who was one of the few success stories for England in their 4-1 Ashes series defeat to world champions Australia, becomes the first Englishman since Graham Gooch 10 years ago to top the rankings.

Australia's Ricky Ponting, in the form of his life after guiding his country to a successful World Cup defence in South Africa last month, jumped four places to sixth after scoring 117 and an unbeaten 42 in Sunday's victory in Guyana.

Justin Langer, who also scored a century in the first Test of the series, moved up two places to 11th.

Another Australian, paceman Glenn McGrath who missed the win over the West Indies for personal reasons, remains the top-ranked bowler.
