A budding cricketer's extraordinary feat of scoring 301 in a single day at the Cricket Association of Bengal's 110-point junior tournament was mired in controversy, following a complaint of impersonation against the player.
Dum Dum Shipashree Cricket Coaching Centre lodged a formal complaint with the umpires on Friday, saying Kanchrapra Cricket Coaching Centre player Masrum Sarkar, who was credited with the triple century on Thursday, the opening day of the two-day match, did not even take the field.
Instead, Shilpashree alleged, Soumen Ghosh, an unregistered player, had impersonated as Sarkar in the match, played at Kanchrapara, near Kolkata, and scored the triple ton.
The official score sheet mentioned Sarkar as the batsman who played the blazing knock, and there was no mention of Ghosh in the playing eleven.
The umpires have forwarded the complaint to the CAB.
CAB joint-secretary Amitava Banerjee said the allegation is 'very serious in nature' and would be thoroughly investigated by its junior tournament committee.
"Let us wait for the umpires' report. During investigation we will call both the players as also the umpires and the officials of both teams," he said.
If proved guilty, Kanchrapara Cricket Coaching centre could be scratched from the tournament and also banned from future events. Ghosh is also likely to face punitive action.
