Cricket journalist Chesterfield dies in Sri Lanka

Eminent cricket journalist Trevor Chesterfield, better known as Chesters, has passed away, his family said on Wednesday.

Chesterfield was born in New Zealand before shifting base to South Africa. He moved home to Sri Lanka in 2004.

He wrote a weekly column for The Island newspaper in Colombo since then.

A renowned cricket writer, known for his forthright comments, Chesterfield contributed guest columns to Times of India and many Indian cricket websites.

The funeral will take place on Saturday at Moratuwa, a suburb south of Colombo.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat, in a condolence message, said: "Trevor was a true lover of the game and a fine writer for more than 50 years. I knew him from his time in South Africa and he was always a fair, balanced and fearless journalist with strong views on the game, underpinned by a genuine desire to see cricket continue to flourish.

"With cricket being his passion, it was fitting for him to have witnessed a splendid World Cup through to the end. Indeed, I met him during the event in Colombo and it is a shock to hear about his passing. I would like to send my condolences and those of the ICC to his family and friends around the world. His well-considered views and vast cricketing experience will be missed. May he rest in peace."
