IPL Auction: Auctioneer Edmeades 'stable'

Veteran auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed while conducting the Indian Premier League 2022 Player Auction and was replaced by sports presenter Charu Sharma for the remainder of the event.

The 60-year-old Edmeades received medical treatment after a preliminary check-up that found him 'stable'.

Sharma, who was CEO of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise during the IPL's first season, was handed the auction duties as Edmeades recovers following the fall that was blamed on low blood pressure.

'Mr Hugh Edmeades, the IPL Auctioneer, had an unfortunate fall due to Postural Hypotension during the IPL Auction this afternoon. The medical team attended to him immediately after the incident & he is stable,' read a statement from the IPL.

'Mr Charu Sharma will continue with the Auction proceedings today,' it added.

Edmeades's collapse midway into the proceedings led to an early lunch amid commotion inside the auction room.

"He has been attended to by a doctor. He is doing fine, his blood pressure dropped suddenly and that was the reason for his sudden collapse. We will know more once he has a thorough check-up," a BCCI source said.

"He is stable and we will give further updates later," he added.

Edmeades, who has conducted over 2,700 auctions across the globe, had Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga's name under the hammer when he fell from the auction dais.

When bidding resumed, Hasaranga, who started with a base price of Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million), was sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore for a whopping Rs 10.75 crore (Rs 107.5 million).

Meanwhile, Suresh Raina, Steve Smith, South Africa's David Miller and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan were among the high-profile names who went unsold during the second round of bidding.

Their names will come up again at the auction and they could find bidders in the accelerated part of the auction.

India all-rounder Deepak Hooda was sold to Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 5.75 crore (Rs 57.5 million) while Harshal Patel was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 10.75 crore (Rs 107.5 million).

Nitish Rana was picked up by KKR for Rs 8 crore (Rs 80 million) while West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 8.75 crore (Rs 87.5 million).

India batter Manish Pandey was picked by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 4.6 crore (Rs 46 million) while West Indies left-hander Shimron Hetmyer was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 8.5 crore (Rs 85 million).

Former India batter Robin Uthappa was acquired by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 2 crore (rs 20 million). England opening batter Jason Roy was acquired by Gujarat Titans for Rs 2 crore.

India opening batter Devdutt Padikkal was sold to Rajasthan Royals for Rs 7.75 crore (Rs 77.5 million), while West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was picked up by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 4.4 crore (Rs 44 million).

Earlier in the auction, Shreyas Iyer fetched the highest price, picked by KKR for Rs 12.25 crore (Rs 122.5 million), in the first round of bidding.

Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada was acquired by Punjab Kings for Rs 9.25 crore (Rs 92.5 million).

India opening batter Shikhar Dhawan was acquired by Punjab Kings for Rs 8.25 crore (Rs 82.5 million), spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was bought by Rajasthan Royals for Rs 5 crore (Rs 50 million) and Australia Test captain Pat Cummins was taken by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 7.25 crore (Rs 72.5 million).

Kiwi pacer Trent Boult went to Rajasthan Royals for Rs 8 crore (Rs 80 million) while India pacer Mohammed Shami was picked by new franchise Gujarat Titans for Rs 6.25 crore (Rs 62.5 million).

Royal Challengers Bangalore bagged South Africa batter Faf du Plessis for Rs 7 crore (Rs 70 million), Lucknow Super Giants, the other new franchise, picked South Africa's Quinton de Kock for Rs 6.75 crore (Rs 67.5 million) and Australia's run-machine David Warner was picked by Delhi Capitals for Rs 6.25 crore (Rs 62. 5 million).
