Stats: The rise of Rahane and Pujara vs New Zealand

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane helped India reach 239 for seven in the second Test against New Zealand after a see-saw opening day, in Kolkata, on Friday.

# Ajinkya Rahane (77) posted his second highest score against New Zealand in Tests - his highest being 118 at Wellington in February 2014.

# Rahane's innings is his first fifty vs New Zealand - his ninth in Tests.

# Rahane is averaging 75.60 in six Tests this year – his aggregate being 378 in seven innings, including a hundred and two fifties - his best performance in terms of averages in a calendar year.

# Under Virat Kohli's captaincy, Rahane is averaging 51.65 - his tally being 1033 (ave.51.65) in 16 Tests, including four centuries and four fifties.

# In the second Test of a series in Tests, Rahane, has registered batting average of 86.55 - his aggregate being 779 runs in eleven innings (8 Tests), including four hundreds and four fifties.

# Cheteshwar Pujara (87 off 219 balls) has recorded his second highest score against New Zealand in Tests – his highest being 159 at Hyderabad in August 2012.

# Pujara's third fifty vs New Zealand is his tenth in Tests.

# Pujara, with his 87, took his batting average against New Zealand to fifty-plus - his tally being 503 in 10 innings at an average of 50.30, including a century and three fifties.

# Pujara has registered three consecutive fifty-plus scores for the first time in his Test career - 62 & 78 at Green Park, Kanpur and 87 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata - all in this series against New Zealand.

# Pujara's Test record in India is quite impressive – his aggregate being 1708 runs (ave.65.69) in 19 Tests, including five centuries and seven fifties.

# Rahane and Pujara were associated in a partnership of 141 for the fourth wicket - India's highest for this wicket at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, obliterating the 140 between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman against West Indies in November 2011.

# The stand is the third highest for the fourth wicket in Tests at Eden Gardens - the highest being 217 between Basil Butcher and Rohan Kanhai for West Indies vs India in 1958-59.

# In his last 25 Tests, Virat Kohli is averaging 43.26 - his tally being 1774, including seven hundreds and four fifties. Only once in a calendar year in 2013, he has managed 50-plus average - his aggregate being 616 in eight Tests at an average of 56.00, including two centuries and eight fifties.

# Since posting 200 vs West Indies at North Sound in July 2016, Kohli has scored 44, 3 & 4 vs West Indies and 9, 18 & 9 vs New Zealand.

# Kohli is averaging 41.00 in Tests this year - his tally being 287 in seven innings.

# Matt Henry (3/35) has registered his second best bowling performance in Tests next only to the 4 for 93 vs England at Lord's in May 2015.
