February 26, 2013 15:39 IST

Captain MS Dhoni’s heroics with the bat and spinner R Ashwin’s 12 wickets in the match, helped India register a comprehensive 8-wicket victory against Australia.

Here are a few statistical highlights from Day 5 of the first Test played in Chennai on Tuesday.

# Twenty wickets fell to Indian spinners in a Test match for the third time -- the second time at Chennai, first occasion being vs England in 1972-73.  The only instance of such a record made by Indian bowlers in an overseas Test was against New Zealand at Auckland in 1975-76.

MS Dhoni shows off his Man of the Match medal on Tuesday# Dhoni received his second Man of the Match award in Tests. Both have come against Australia -- his first was at Mohali in 2008-09 for recording 92 & 68 not out.

# India have won most Tests (13) in Chepauk, Chennai, followed by Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi (11) and EdenGardens, Kolkata (10).

# India's eight-wicket triumph is their biggest in terms of wickets against Australia in Tests. Against Australia, India won three and lost one out of seven contested at Chepauk, Chennai (Drawn 2 and Tied 1).

# Moises Henriques (81 not out) posted his highest Test score, eclipsing the 68 in the first innings.

# Henriques's match tally of 149 is the second highest by an Australian batsman against India on Test debut.  Michael Clarke's 168 (151 + 17) in the 2004-05 Bangalore Test is an Australian record against India on debut.

# Dhoni equalled Sourav Ganguly's feat of 21 Indian victories in Tests. As against Ganguly's 49 Tests, Dhoni has played 44 as captain.

# Dhoni has not lost a single Test against Australia in India, winning all five contested by him as captain. India, for the first time, have won four consecutive Tests against Australia in India.

# India's eight-wicket win is their 21st out of 83 played against Australia in Tests -- winning % 25.30 (Drawn 23 and Tied 1).

# Only three bowlers -- Vinoo Mankad, Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin -- have captured 12 wickets or more for India in wins.

# Henriques and Lyon were associated in a stand of 66 -- Australia's second best against India for the last wicket, next only to the 77 between Dave Gilbert and Allan Border at Melbourne in December 1985. Both instances are the only ones for Australia when the last wicket had produced the highest partnership of the innings.
