Australia's Aaron Finch hammered 156 off just 63 balls against England to set a new world record for the highest individual innings in Twenty20 internationals, at Southampton, on Thursday.

He bettered the previous record of 123, by New Zealand's Brendon McCullum against Bangladesh, at Pallekele, last year.

Finch's century is only the 10th in all T20 internationals, the first by an Australian and first by any batsman in England.

His innings is also the third highest in all T20 cricket, the top two innings coming in the Indian Premier League.

He was on course to break the record for the fastest T20 international century before eventually reaching his hundred from 47 balls, two more than South Africa's Richard Levi, who holds the record.

Remarkably, Finch got off the mark, reached his 50, hundred and 150, with sixes!

Finch, during his innings against England on Thursday, also set a record for most sixes in a T20 international.

He slammed 14 sixes, and went past South African Richard Levi's record of 13 sixes, against New Zealand last year.

There is no bigger hitter in world cricket than Gayle, though.

He gave ample proof of that when he smashed 17 sixes during his record-breaking innings of 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bangalore versus Pune Warriors.

Finch hit 14 sixes and 11 fours during Thursday's innings,  which means 128 of his runs came in boundaries alone!

The 14 sixes and 128 runs in boundaries are also new T20 International records. In fact, no one has scored 100 runs in boundaries alone in T20 Internationals.

Remarkably, Finch got off the mark, reached his 50, hundred and 150, with sixes.
