Indian spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi, who mentored Monty Panesar at the beginning of his international career, today called on the England spinner to "behave" after being fined for urinating on a nightclub's bouncers in an inebriated state.
"Very naughty MontyP!Never thoght U'd b so originaly adventuresome!I'd pardon yur 1st attempt at rediscovereing yurself Monty! Now behave Son!," tweeted Bedi, who had offered Panesar advice and guidance during his maiden tour of India in 2007.
Bedi had described Panesar as an excellent student of the game at that time.
The latest incident happened at a nightclub in Brighton on Monday, just hours before England retained the Ashes at Old Trafford by drawing the third Test for which Panesar was included in the 14-man squad but not named in the playing XI.
The 31-year-old left-arm spinner had been partying at the Shooshh club on Brighton's beachfront, which was hosting a Gay Pride event. However, when a group of women complained he was hassling them, Panesar was asked to leave, the tabloid the Sun reported.
Panesar, born to Indian parents, proceeded to the promenade above the club and relieved himself on the bouncers standing below. The bouncers then chased Panesar until he was cornered in a nearby pizza parlour, according to a media report.
The bouncers dragged Panesar back to the club and called the police. He was fined £90 pound sterling by the Sussex police.
Panesar later released a statement, through his spokesperson, offering an "unreserved apology" for his behaviour. "Monty would like to apologise unreservedly for any offence caused."
Meanwhile, Panesar is reportedly facing a threat to his international career with coach and team director Andy Flower taking a dim view of his “bizarre” urinating on bouncers in a nightclub.
According to the Mirror, the spinner would have to explain himself to Flower, who is understood to have taken an extremely dim view of Panesar's run-in with the law, after he has been dealt with by Sussex County Cricket Club.
Though Panesar had to pay fine to the police after the incident, the report said that he might have to pay a far greater price concerning his career as England has been concerned over his erratic behaviour for some time.
The report further said that Panesar could now miss out on this winter's Ashes tour as a result of his indiscretion despite being the second best spinner in the country, adding that the left-arm bowler has not been included in the squad for the fourth Ashes Test at Durham, which starts on Friday.
According to the report, Flower will support whatever sanctions are passed down by Panesar's county, adding that Sussex has also launched a full investigation into their spinner's drunken behaviour on a night out. Panesar, who lives in Hove, has two years left to run on his current Sussex deal, the report added.
