December 08, 2005 21:45 IST

Two days ahead of the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka at his home ground, the Ferozeshah Kotla, Virender Sehwag is down with fever.

Sources said the dashing batsman, who missed the Indian team's morning practice session as a result of the illness, consulted doctors at the Gangaram hospital for what the team mamagement called "a routine check-up" but had to be admitted.

''He was admitted today after he complained of throat infection and bodyache. So it was decided to put him under observation for the next 24-48 hours after which he could be discharged,'' Dr S P Byotra, Senior Consultant, Department of Medicine, at the hospital said.

Apart from bodyache, the cricketer is reportedly having problems swallowing.

"It is just fever," Indian team media manager Wg Cdr Baladitya said.

Asked if the Delhi batsman would be fit and available for practice on Friday, Baladitya replied: "Hopefully. We have to see."

The second Test starts on Saturday.
