Hashim Amla scored his maiden Test century to lead a solid South African batting display on the fourth day of the second Ttest against New Zealand on Sunday.

Scorecard

Amla's 149 was the top score in South Africa's 427 for five, which they reached in reply to New Zealand's 593 for eight declared when bad light ended play nine overs early.

South Africa had needed 394 to avoid following on and Ashwell Prince and Mark Boucher saw them safely over that hurdle with their unbroken stand of 66. Prince was 70 not out with Boucher on 26.

Amla batted for almost seven hours in which he faced 317 balls and hit 20 fours. Jacques Kallis's 71 took him past 8,000 runs in Test cricket.
