Rahil ShahMumbai's poor showing in this year's Ranji Trophy tournament continues. The 40-time champions were thrashed by an innings and 44 runs by Tamil Nadu in Chennai on Friday.

Replying to Tamil Nadu's huge first innings score of 417, Mumbai, shot out for a paltry 141 in the first innings, were bowled out for 232 in their second, on Day 3 of the Group A match.

This is only the fourth time that Mumbai have suffered the ignominy of an innings defeat. The last time they were beaten by an innings was nearly 64 years ago when they lost to Gujarat in 1950-51.

Captain Surya Kumar Yadav top-scored with a patient 65 in Mumbai's second innings on a turning track at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Shreyas Iyer hit 52,  his second fifty of the match, while Siddhesh Lad scored 42. The rest of the batsmen disappointed.

For Tamil Nadu, left-arm spinner Rahil Shah took nine wickets in the match, including 7-34 in the first innings.

Young Baba Indrajith (101) was the only batsman to score a century in the match, while Vijay Shankar made 95 for the hosts.

The huge defeat severely dented Mumbai's chances of making it to the knock-out stages of the tournament.

Following the victory, Tamil Nadu collected seven points, including a bonus one, to take their tally to 23 from seven games. They are second in Group A while Mumbai are fourth with 11 points from six matches.

After resuming their second innings on 12 for one, Mumbai were spun out for 232 in 102.5 overs.

Wasim Jaffer departed early in the day for three, but Tare and Iyer put on 84 for the third wicket.

Mumbai were 97 for two before Yadav and Lad added 75 to steady the innings briefly. But the lower order crumbled again without a fight.

Left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas led Tamil Nadu's charge in the second innings, claiming three wickets, including that of Mumbai captain Yadav.

Murali Vijay made a useful contribution with his part-time off-breaks, claiming the wickets of Tare and Iyer.

Brief scores:

Mumbai (1st innings): 141 all out in 48.5 ovs (Shreyas Iyer 50, Rahil Shah 7-34).

Tamil Nadu (1st innings): 417 all out in 122 ovs (Baba Indrajith 101, Vijay Shankar 95, Dinesh Karthik 43, Akshay Girap 4-87).

Mumbai (2nd innings): 232 all out in 102.5 ovs (Surya Kumar Yadav 65, Shreyas Iyer 52, R Aushik Srinivas 3-27).
