Tamil Nadu in dire straits

Hyderabad tightened their grip on Tamil Nadu on day three of the Ranji Trophy 'Elite' Group B match on Friday.

They dismissed Tamil Nadu for 240, against their first innings total of 447, and after enforcing the follow-on, had the visitors on 37 for one at close of play at the Gymkhana grounds in Hyderabad.

Speedster Vishnuvardhan wrecked the Tamil Nadu innings, accounting for the top batsmen, with a five-wicket haul.

Fiaz Ahmed and Shivaji Yadav completed the formalities, taking two wickets apiece as the visitors were bundled for 240.

The home team took a thumping 207-run first innings lead.

Resuming at 87 for 3, Tamil Nadu were 149 for 6 at lunch. But the innings collapsed like nine pins in the next session in the face of some accurate spin bowling by Shivaji Yadav.

Only Sriram (58), S S Viswanath (50) and S Sharat (33) showed some grit but could not take the team past the danger mark.

Vishnuvardhan, who had cracked a breezy half century in Hyderabad's first innings, returned with impressive figures of 27-5-97-5.

The second innings was no different, with the Hyderabad bowlers getting on top and troubling the batsmen with teasing line and testing length.

Shivaji Yadav foxed Dinesh Karthik (10) with a flighted delivery and the visitors were 37 for one when stumps were drawn.

Tamil Nadu are 170 runs short with nine second innings wickets in hand and a day left.
