Rain threatens to play spoilsport in India's pursuit of a series levelling win in the second and final Test against South Africa in Kolkata as weatherman forecast a cloudy sky with chances of thundershowers lashing the city in the next 24 hours.

With two more days to go, India have a victory in sight as South Africa are fighting hard to save the match, trailing the home team by 341 runs.

But the picture is no glory for the hosts as in their next 24 hour forecast, the IMD regional centre bulletin says, "There is partly cloudy sky. Rain and thundershowers may occur in some areas."

The bulletin, released at 5.30 pm today, is meant for Kolkata and 50 km adjoining areas.

Rain would be the last thing India would want as Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men are trailing the series 0-1 after their innings and six runs humiliating loss at Nagpur.

India will have to win the ongoing second and final Test to level the series and retain their number one Test rankings.
