Former India skipper Polly Umgirar has been discharged from the Bombay Hospital after having undergone a session of chemotherapy for Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects a part of the body's immune system.
"Umrigar was discharged last evening from the hospital. His condition was okay. His further course of treatment would be decided by his doctor (Jehangir) Sorabjee," informed hospital spokesperson Dr Ashish Tiwari.
The octogenerian cricketer had represented India in 59 official and 17 unofficial Tests between 1948 and 1962, amassing over 3600 runs in the former grade of cricket with 12 centuries to boot.
Umrigar, conferred by the government with Padma Shri title in 1962 and by the BCCI with the C K Nayudu award in 1998, captained the country in eight official Tests and on the short visit to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in November, 1956 to play unofficial matches.
