Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee clarified that while speaking on the motion on sports, members should not restrict themselves just to cricket, but also discuss sports facilities in the country and other upcoming sporting events.
Last week an anguished speaker was so moved at Sourav Ganguly being dropped from the Indian team for the third and final Test that he had called it 'disgraceful' and said that the matter would be taken up in parliament.
A number of other members of parliament, particularly Gurudas Gupta of CPI had also raised the issue.
"There have been some well meaning developments in the last few days. The media had written about my comments and had even written editorials as to how I should conduct the house. I am not talking about one individual. I would request the members to talk about the general condition of sports in India while speaking," Chatterjee said before he invited Navin Jindal to initiate discussion.
Former captain of the Indian hockey team, Dhanraj Pillay was also there in the visitor's gallery.
Gupta said that he has reasons to believe that Ganguly would be included in the Indian team for Pakistan tour next month.
"I have spoken to the people who matter in the Board of Control for Cricket in India and they have assured me that Ganguly would be included in the side," he said.
