Franklin to replace Ryder in One-day squad

November 24, 2010 13:42 IST

New Zealand fast bowler James Franklin has returned to the Black Caps' One-day International squad in place of Jesse Ryder, who has been ruled out due to a calf injury.

Ryder had picked up the injury in the drawn first Test in Ahmedabad, and aggravated it further during the final Test match in Nagpur.

"Ryder suffered a calf injury in the first Test and although he showed great determination to push through the discomfort in the second and third Test it is clear the injury has not improved," the New Zealand Herald quoted selector Mark Greatbatch, as saying.

James Franklin"Due to the condensed nature of the tour there is insufficient time to fully recover for the One-Day matches. We believe it is best for Jesse to return to New Zealand where he can undergo further assessment and continue his rehabilitation," he added.

The 26-year-old finished the three-match Test series as the second-highest run-getter for New Zealand with 274 runs from five innings.

Greatbatch said that left-handed fast bowler Franklin was the 'ideal replacement' because of his all-rounder abilities.

"While it's obviously disappointing for Jesse this gives James a wonderful opportunity," Greatbatch said.
