Mumbai Indians appoint Pollard as skipper for CLT20

September 11, 2014 21:22 IST

Dashing all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been named the captain of the Mumbai Indians after shoulder injury and fractured finger forced regular captain Rohit Sharma to pull-out of the upcoming Champions League T20, starting from Saturday.

The defending champions Mumbai Indians will be playing in the qalifiers, starting their campaign against Lahore Lions.

Pollard has been one of the mainstays for Mumbai Indians after having joined the franchise in the third season after his brilliant show for Trinidad and Tobago in the inaugural edition of the Champions League T20 back in 2009.

"It is very unfortunate that Rohit will be unable to lead the team, and I take this opportunity to wish him a fast comeback. I truly understand that it is a huge honour and a privilege to captain the vibrant Mumbai Indians side, and thank the team management for bestowing their faith in me," Pollard was quoted as saying in a press release.

"I am aware of the great expectations ahead of us. However, I am confident that together, we will face the challenges, and work towards retaining the glory and the stature of the Mumbai Indians team," the all-rounder further stated.

MI's chief mentor Anil Kumble said, "We will definitely feel Rohit's absence in the team and wish him well. However, I strongly believe, that you can only be as good as the opportunities you get and I am confident that Kieron with his varied experience and impressive track record, will rise to the occasion, and align the Mumbai Indians for a competitive performance."

Pollard played a crucial role in Mumbai Indians’ triumph, during the 2013 IPL Season by smashing 29 sixes, which enabled Mumbai Indians to clinch their maiden IPL Title.

Pollard's career in the Mumbai Indians team spans over nearly 96 matches, scoring more than 1,700 runs with over 100 sixes and 63 wickets to his credit. He was also adjudged the Man of the Match in the 2013 IPL final because of his overall brilliant display.
