Mumbai Indians blazed away to their highest ever total in the Indian Premier League, but despite a 42-run victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad failed to make it to the Indian Premier League play-offs, in Abu Dhabi, on Friday.

Batting first, opener Ishan Kishan registered the fastest fifty of IPL 2021 with a rollicking 84 off 32 balls while Suryakumar Yadav slammed an 82 off 40 balls to power Mumbai Indians to a huge 235 for 9.

However, they failed to restrict the Sunrisers to below the 65-run mark, which would have taken them to fourth place in the eight-team league standings ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders.

Sunrisers also put in a good effort with the bat, with stand in captain Manish Pandey scoring an unbeaten 69 off 41 balls.

The defending champions, who had to beat the Sunrisers by 171 runs or more to leapfrog Kolkata Knight Riders on the points table and qualify for the play-offs, could only restrict Hyderabad outfit to 193 for eight in a high-scoring game.

It is the first time in three seasons that five-time champions Mumbai Indians haven't entered the last four, after lifting the trophy in the past two editions.

In the other concluding round-robin match in Dubai, played simultaneously, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Delhi Capitals by seven wickets.

Despite the defeat, Delhi Capitals finished atop in the points table. They will now take on second-placed Chennai Super Kings in Qualifier 1 on Sunday.

Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers finished third in the eight-team league and will face Kolkata Knight Riders in the ‘Eliminator’ on Monday.

Chasing 236, Jason Roy (34 off 21) and Abhishek Sharma (33 off 16) got SRH off to a flier, stitching 64 runs in 5.2 overs. But the Sunrisers lost their plot soon after the dismissal of the openers, with Jimmy Neesham striking twice -- first accounting for Sharma and then Abdul Samad.

Pandey (69 off 41; 7x4s, 2x6s) and Priyan Garg (29) shared 56 runs for the fifth wicket before Jasprit Bumrah dislodged the stand.

Pandey played a captain's knock and kept SRH in the hunt, albeit mathematically, reaching his 50 off 30 balls.

It was always going to be an uphill task for SRH to get 70 runs off 24 balls and it turned out to be so with Pandey remaining unbeaten.

Earlier, opting to bat first, Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start as openers Rohit Sharma and Kishan came out all guns blazing against the Sunrisers bowling attack.

Ishan hammered four fours in the second over to make Mumbai Indians’ intentions clear.

The wicketkeeper-batsman kept punishing the bowlers and slammed the fastest fifty, off 16 balls, in IPL 2021 as he went on a run-riot. In the process he bettered the record previously held by Pollard, who performed the feat off 17 balls.

The opening partnership was broken when Rashid Khan removed Rohit in the sixth over, but, by then, Mumbai Indians had scored 80 runs.

Jason Holder claimed the second wicket, Hardik Pandya departing while trying to hit every ball out of the park.

Ishan, meanwhile, continued his onslaught and took Mumbai Indians to 120 runs from only nine overs.

Umran Malik provided the Sunrisers a major breakthrough by dismissing Ishan in the 10th over.

In the process, Mumbai Indians equalled the record for the highest total after 10 overs in IPL history as they smashed 131-3.

Abhishek Sharma dismissed both Kieron Pollard and James Neesham off successive deliveries as the Sunrisers looked like staging a comeback.

However, Suryakumar Yadav then went on the offensive and smashed a half-century off just 24 balls.

He kept the scoreboard ticking with trademark cricketing shots, the most notable among them being a lofted hit over pacer Sidhharth Kaul's head to bring up his 50 off 24 deliveries.

He continued the fireworks, scoring 82 off 40 balls, to enable Mumbai Indians finish with 235.

The last five overs got Mumbai Indians 58 runs.
