Statistical highlights from the fourth day’s play of the third Test between India and Australia played in Mohali on Sunday.
# India (499) recorded their highest total against Australia at Mohali, bettering the 469 in December 2001.
# India have been dismissed for the first time for less than 500 in the current series.
# Both the openers have registered centuries for India for the seventh time in a Test innings -- the second time against Australia -- the previous occasion being Sunil Gavaskar (172) and Krish Srikkanth (116) in the 1985-86 Sydney Test.
# For the second time for India and the 14th time overall, both the openers have registered 150 or more in the same innings.
# Murali Vijay posted all his three centuries against Australia -- his first was 139 at Bangalore in October 2010. He has registered back to back centuries for the first time --167 at Hyderabad and 153 at Mohali.
# Vijay totalled 300 in a Test series for the first time, aggregating 336 at an average of 84.00 in four innings, including two hundreds.
# Vijay became the first Indian player to register two consecutive innings of 150 or more against Australia. Overall, he is the fifth Indian batsman to accomplish the said feat in Tests, joining Vijay Hazare (1951-52), Dilip Vengsarkar (1986-87), Vinod Kambli (1992-93) and Virender Sehwag (2007-08).
# Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/25) recorded his best bowling figures in Tests, bettering the 3 for 53 in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test.
# Shikhar Dhawan's brilliant innings of 187 off 174 balls is the second highest by a left-handed debutant in Tests, behind Jacques Rudolph's unbeaten 222 against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2002-03.
# His innings is the second highest by an opener on debut. Brendon Kuruppu is the only opening batsman to post a double hundred on Test debut -- 201 not out for Sri Lanka against New Zealand at Colombo, CCC in April 1987.
# Dhawan has recorded 33 fours and two sixes -- the most by a left-handed batsman on debut, surpassing the 29 fours and two sixes hit by Rudolph in his above innings.
# His tally is the second highest by a Test debutant, behind Tip Foster for England against Australia at Sydney in 1903-04.
# Dhawan's above knock is the highest individual innings by any batsman at Mohali.
# Dhawan's 187 is the sixth highest by a debutant in Test Cricket. Tip Foster's 287 for England against Australia at Sydney in 1903-04 is the highest individual innings on debut. Jacques Rudolph, Lawrence Rowe, Matthew Sinclair and Brendon Kuruppu are the other four players to have recorded double hundreds on debut.
# Dhawan's strike rate of 107.47 is a record by a Test debutant (minimum 100).
# Dhawan and Vijay were associated in a stand of 289 -- the highest opening partnership involving a debutant in Tests, eclipsing the 276 between Stewie Dempster (136) and Jackie Mills (117) for New Zealand against England at Basin Reserve, Wellington in January 1930.
# The above stand is the third highest opening partnership for India in Tests, behind the 413 by Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy vs New Zealand at Chepauk, Chennai in 1955-56 and 410 by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag vs Pakistan at Lahore in 2005-06.
# The said partnership is the second highest by any opening pair against Australia, behind the 323 by Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes against England at Melbourne in 1911-12.
# Sachin Tendulkar, with 746 runs at an average of 49.73, set a record for the highest run-aggregate at PCA Stadium, Mohali, bettering Rahul Dravid's tally of 735 runs at an average of 56.53 in 9 Tests.
# Virat Kohli registered his sixth fifty in Tests -- his second against Australia.
# Ishant Sharma posted his 16th duck in Tests -- his fifth against Australia.
# Phillip Hughes posted his first fifty against India -- his sixth in Tests.
# Peter Siddle (5/71) produced his second five-wicket haul -- his seventh in Tests.
# Siddle is the second Australian bowler to capture five wickets in an innings at Mohali. Mitchell Johnson was the first to take five wickets at Mohali -- 5 for 64 in October 2010.
# Siddle (5/71) has recorded his best bowling figures against India in India. His excellent figures are his second best against India, behind the 5 for 49 at Adelaide in January 2012.
# Siddle's above figures are his second five-wicket haul on foreign soil -- his first ever being 5 for 21 against England at Leeds in August 2009.
