Stats: Vijay extends impressive record against Australia

Statistical highlights from the third day's play of the first Test between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

# Murali Vijay's 53 off 88 balls is his seventh fifty in Tests - his second vs Australia. 

# Vijay's batting record vs Australia is impressive - his aggregate being 733 (ave.61.08), including three hundreds and two fifties, in seven Tests.

# Cheteshwar Pujara (73 off 135 balls) has posted his fourth fifty against Australia - his sixth in Tests. 

# Pujara's above knock is his second highest away from home in Tests, behind the 153 vs South Africa at Johannesburg in December 2013.

Pujara has managed fifty-plus innings in three consecutive innings against Australia for the first time - 52 & 82 not at Delhi's Feroz Shah Kotla and 73 at Adelaide. 

# Pujara's batting record vs Australia in Tests is superb - his aggregate being 568 in ten innings at an average of 71.00.

# 300 times in Test Cricket a team has declared after scoring 500 or more. Australia have accomplished the feat 67 times, a record.

Virat Kohli became the fourth Indian player to post a century on debut as captain. Vijay Hazare (164 not vs England at Delhi in 1951-52) was the first to do so. He is followed by Sunil Gavaskar (116 vs New Zealand at Auckland in 1975-76) and Dilip Vengsarkar (102 vs West Indies at Delhi in 1987-88).

# Kohli's third century vs Australia is his seventh in Tests.

# An Indian opening pair is without a half-century stand in the last twelve innings in Australia. The 30-run stand between Dhawan and Vijay is India's highest opening partnership in the last ten innings in Tests in Australia. 

# Kohli enjoys an outstanding record in Tests at Adelaide at Adelaide - 253 runs (ave.84.33) in three innings, including two centuries. This is the only venue where he has recorded two Test hundreds.

Ajinkya Rahane (62 off 76 balls) has recorded his first fifty in three innings vs Australia - his fifth in Tests. 

# Rahane is the leading run-getter for India in Tests in 2014 - his aggregate being 523 (ave.40.23) in eight Tests. 

# Kohli and Rahane have shared a stand of 101 - India's third century partnership for the fourth wicket at Adelaide. 

# 50-plus stands have been registered for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th wickets in the same Test innings for India for the first time in Australia. In all, the Adelaide Test has recorded the third such instance for India vs Australia in Tests.
