With his 99-run knock against the UAE in a pool B match, de Villiers took his total score at the World Cups to 1,142, which placed him seventh on the overall list topped by retired Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar (2,278 runs).

During the course of his 82-ball knock on Thursday, de Villiers hit four sixes, which took his overall World Cup count to 20, breaking the record of 18 set by former Australian opener Matthew Hayden in 2007.

The dashing right-hander, however, also became only the third batsman in World Cup history to be dismissed on 99 -- the other two being Australia's Adam Gilchrist (2003) and another South African JP Duminy (2011).

The prolific 31-year-old currently sits at the top ICC ODI rankings for batsmen and holds the record for the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in one-dayers.
