Harbhajan shines for Surrey

July 09, 2005 18:43 IST

Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh sparkled with the bat as he scored an attacking 84 for Surrey against Gloucestershire in an English County Championship Division One match in Bristol, on Saturday.

Electing to bat first, Surrey had scored 457 for 6 on the opening day yesterday, with Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood stealing the show with a 91-ball 88, which included 11 boundaries and 3 sixes. England's Graham Thorpe also contributed with an useful innings of 73.

However, Mahmood could only add one more run today, as he was run out for 89.

But, Harbhajan continued the fireworks as he sizzled in his 95-ball knock, hitting 11 boundaries and 3 sixes. He got good support from Martin Bicknell, who made 76.

Harbhajan's cameo came to an end when he was bowled by slow left-arm bowler Ian Fisher. Surrey were eventually bowled out for 603 at lunch on the second day.
