A sparkling knock of 142 against Kent might have brought an end to Sourav Ganguly's lean patch with the bat, but the Indian captain said his first century for English County Glamorgan brought him little joy since his team ended up on the losing side.

bad," Ganguly said.

"This is a young side but we have to keep backing them and make them believe that they're good enough to do well," he was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

The 31-year-old, who will be with the County side for another one month and a half, conceded that it would be difficult to avoid relegation from the Championship.

But he said he had the confidence that the players had it in them to stem the rot.

"Everyone's behind the coach [John Derrick] and captain [Robert Croft]," he said.

"The easy solution is to get rid of one or two people at the top, but it's not the right solution. This is a team sport and I'm sure we can turn it round for Crofty and John, who have put such massive efforts in for the boys."

Derrick took some comfort from Ganguly's form and said he hoped the other players to be inspired by the Indian captain's show.

"Sourav's been excellent and the other guys have to take spirit from that," said the coach.

"We'll keep fighting and look forward to next week and find a way to improve."
