Pietersen fractures left thumb

Having being ruled out of Tuesday's England-India fifth and final ODI here after suffering a thumb injury, Kevin Pietersen is still in contention for the forthcoming international Twenty20 fixture against India to be held in the city on Saturday.

Pietersen had fractured his left thumb during the fourth one-dayer in Mumbai, which England lost by six wickets.

Kevin Pietersen"Scans have revealed Pietersen has a fractured left thumb after being struck while fielding during the second innings of Sunday's match," England and Wales Cricket Board release said.

"He will remain with the England team and continue to undergo assessment and treatment in a bid to prove his fitness ahead of England's international Twenty20 fixture against India on Saturday," added the release.

Pietersen's absence paved the way for Ian Bell, who made his first appearance against India in the ongoing ODI series.
