Cricket Association of Bengal president Jagmohan Dalmiya expressed profound grief at the death of former Indian skipper Vijay Hazare.
In a condolence message to the celebrated batsman's family, Dalmiya said on Saturday, "I am aware that he was not keeping in good health for the last few days, but his demise has come as a shock".
Describing Hazare as one of the greatest cricketers the country has ever produced, Dalmiya recalled that he was affectionately called 'India's Jack Hobbs' because of his run scoring ability.
"I had the opportunity of interacting with Hazare Sahab a number of times. To me, he was a man of character and dignity, with so much of humility. I guess that was the sign of a truly great cricketer. He was the real ambassador of the gentleman's game," Dalmiya said.
