Indian colts claim series

January 30, 2005 20:52 IST

India under-19 boys clinched the three-match series against England with a convincing innings and 106-run victory in the second four-day 'Test' at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday.

Resuming their second innings at 140 for six, England failed to put up any resistance in the face of some disciplined bowling by the hosts and folded up for 157, fifty minutes into the morning session on the concluding day.

The match ended after only 13.4 overs, as England, needing 123 more runs to save innings defeat, lost their four remaining wickets for 17 runs.

The Indian colts had scripted an emphatic 293-run win in the first 'Test' at Bangalore.

Leg spinner Piyush Chawla followed up his four-wicket haul in the first innings with an equally impressive show in the second innings, returning with four for 43.

Chawla first claimed overnight batsman Moeen Ali (41) before evicting D A Griffiths (0), while Manoj Tiwari celebrated his elevation to captaincy in the one-day matches by getting rid of A Harrison (8).

In between, Tiwari gave a fine display on the field to run out M Lawson (3).

Lawson had set off for the run after guiding the ball to the cover, where Tiwari picked up the ball and in a flash threw down the wicket at the non-striker's end with the England batsman still short of the crease.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Tiwari will lead the Indian under-19 side against England in the five one-day cricket matches beginning February 8.

Tiwari has also been named as vice captain in the 14-member new-look team, to be led by T Ambati Rayudu, for third and final four-day 'Test' to be played at Jamshedpur from February 2-5.

The one-day matches would be played at Agartala (February 8 and 9), Guwahati (Feb 11 and 12) and the final will be at Siliguri (Feb 14).

"We have given stress on including players who would be eligible for the 2006 under-19 World Cup. So players like T Ambati Rayudu and Sikhar Dhawan have been kept out," sources in the junior national selection committee said about the team for one-dayers.

The selectors have picked up a new-look side for the third 'Test' bringing in 10 players who were not included in the squad for the first two 'Tests'.

"This has been done as per the BCCI's policy of giving international exposure to the maximum number of players at the junior level," the sources said.

Brief score: England U-19 147 and 157 (S Davies 66, M Ali 41; P Chawla 4/43) lost to India U-19 410/8 (decl).

Team for the third Test: T A Rayudu (captain), Manoj Tiwari (vice captain), Cheteshwar Pujara, Ganesh Satish, Prashant Naik, Azar Bilakia, Pervez Aziz, R Kini, Sahbad Nadeem, Debabrata Paul, Y Mahesh, Abid Nabi, Piyush Chawla and Harsh Goutam.
