Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored an undefeated 116 on Monday but could not push the West Indies to its first away Test victory against England since 2000, when it won at Birmingham.

The West Indies, chasing a total of 455 runs, were all out for 394. England won the third Test by 60 runs and clinched the series after Steve Harmison and Monty Panesar cleaned up the tail to prevent a successful record run chase.

Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 104 at lunch, having reached his 15th Test hundred with a single off Harmison. It was his first century since scoring an unbeaten 153 against Pakistan in Barbados in May 2005.

"It was pretty difficult out there with the England pacers," he said. "It's a pretty tough wicket to bat on and we batted pretty well on it to get so close to the total."

England captain Michael Vaughan praised Chanderpaul's knock, describing his batting on a rough, turning pitch as "one of the best innings I've seen in Test match cricket".

England's 300th Test win means it leads the series 2-0 ahead of the final Test in Durham, starting Friday.
