India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy because of a lower back injury.
Young fast bowler Harshit Rana has been named as his replacement, while Mohammed Siraj was named among the reserves.
"Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The men’s selection committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement," the BCCI said in a statement.
This is the second ICC tournament which Bumrah will miss because of injury, having previously missed the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022 because of a back injury for which he had to undergo surgery.
Bumrah has been sidelined with back spasms since the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia last month. His last appearance in 50 overs cricket was in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2023.
Bumrah, who took a record 32 wickets in the five-Test series in Australia after bowling 151.2 overs, didn't bowl in the second innings of the final Test in Sydney because of swelling in his back.
The fast bowler has had history of back injuries. He was out of action of nearly a year from September 2022 to August 2023 after undergoing surgery for his back injury.
Rana, who was named as Bumrah's back-up during the England ODI series, impressed with the ball as he picked up four wickets in the first two games.
In another big change, spinner Varun Chakravarthy replaced opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was originally named in the provisional squad.
Jaiswal, Siraj and all-rounder Shivam Dube were named as the reserves and will travel to Dubai if required.
India, who are placed in Group A, will open their campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20, before clashing against Pakistan at the same venue on February 23. Their final league match is against New Zealand on March 2.
India will play all their matches in Dubai after they refused to travel to Pakistan because of security concerns.
