Border returns to Australia selection panel

June 23, 2006 21:24 IST

Former Australia captain Allan Border has returned to the national selection panel, Cricket Australia said on Friday.

The 50-year-old Border was a selector between 1998 and 2005 before standing down to pursue other interests.

"I have always loved working as a selector and only stood down because of other time constraints," Border said in a statement.

"My circumstances have now changed and I am very happy to once again make myself available for this important role in Australian cricket."

Border will join three former Australia team mates on the selection panel, chairman Andrew Hilditch, David Boon and Merv Hughes.

The gritty left-handed batsman captained Australia a record 93 times in 156 Tests between 1978 and 1994. He was Test cricket's leading scorer with 11,174 runs until West Indian Brian Lara passed his mark last year.
