Former India captain Anil Kumble was named as India's new coach.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India president Anurag Thakur made the announcement in Dharamsala on Thursday on the sidelines of the Board's Working Committee meeting.

"For the next one year, Anil Kumble will be the head coach," Thakur said.

He further added that the appointment of the other support staff including batting, bowling and fielding coaches will be made later.

Kumble will take over next month when the Indian team gets together for a camp ahead of the four-Test series in the West Indies.

Kumble and Ravi Shastri were the frontrunners for the coach's job, which was left vacant since Duncan Fletcher's departure after the 50-overs World Cup last year in Australia.

The BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee comprising three of India's greats --  Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and V V S Laxman -- were entrusted the job of picking the right candidate for the top post.

The high-profile committee submitted its final report on the appointment of the new coach at the BCCI’s working committee meeting in Dharamsala.

Kumble, Amre and Rajput were interviewed by the panel, Tendulkar joining in via video conference from London, while former BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale -- the 'coordinator' of the selection process -- assisted the trio.

It was learnt that former India team director Shastri, the other high-profile candidate for the job, was away and interviewed via video conference.

The BCCI received 57 applications from both India and overseas, from which the list was trimmed to 21.
