All-rounder Ashwin takes honours on Day 2

India’s off spinner R Ashwin owned the day’s play with an all-round performance to put England on the back foot in the 2nd Test in Visakhapatnam.

Here are the statistical highlights from the 2nd day’s play between India and England, on Friday.

# Virat Kohli's 167 is the fourth highest by an Indian captain against England in Tests in India -- the three highest innings being Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi's 203 not out at Delhi in February 1964; Mohammad Azharuddin's 182 at Kolkata in January/February 1993 and Sunil Gavaskar's 172 at Bangalore in December 1981.

# Kohli's innings is his second highest in Tests at home behind the 211 vs New Zealand at Indore in October 2016.

# Kohli's batting average of 68.00 this year in Tests is his highest ever in a calendar year -- his tally being 816 in 13 innings (9 Tests).  His overall average as captain is quite impressive -- his aggregate being 1712 (ave.59.03).

# Ravichandran Ashwin's batting average vs England is superb -- his tally being 509 (ave.50.90) runs in 13 innings, including four fifties.

# Overall, Ashwin has managed four centuries and eight fifties in Tests. He enjoys superb batting record when he has batted as number six batsman in Tests, aggregating 324 in five innings, including two hundreds and a half century.

# Ashwin's average in the first innings of Tests this year is superb -- 61.14 while scoring 428 in seven innings, including two hundreds and two fifties.

# Ravindra Jadeja's second duck vs England is his sixth in Tests.  His duck at Visakhapatnam is his first in 14 Tests at home.

# Joe Root has recorded his 24th fifty in Tests -- his fifth vs India.  He is averaging 50-plus this year in Tests -- 1167 runs at an average of 50.73, including three centuries and seven fifties, in 14 Tests.

# Root has recorded eight fifty-plus innings (three centuries + five fifties) against India - the most by him against an opponent in Tests.

# Moeen Ali's strike rate of 47.6 while claiming 25 wickets at an average of 26.68 in seven Tests is the second best by a spinner in Tests vs India (minimum 25 wickets) -- the best being England's Hedley Verity - 38 wickets (ave. 16.18) in six Tests.

# Mohammed Shami is the second bowler to dismiss Alastair Cook as bowled in Tests in Asia -- the first being Irfan Pathan (Nagpur, March 2016).
