Barath gets WI call for Bangladesh Test

July 07, 2009 13:06 IST

Highly-rated 19-year-old batsman Adrian Barath has been named in the West Indies squad for Thursday's first Test against Bangladesh in St.Vincent.

The 13-man squad also features Jamaican seamer Andrew Richardson, who took part in the tour to England in May but has not played in a full international.

Australian-born Brendan Nash, who was not part of the squad for recent Twenty20 and one day games, returns to the side while Trinidad seamer Ravi Rampaul, who impressed with a four-wicket haul in an ODI against India last month, could get his first chance in a Test side.

There was no place for Darren Bravo, younger brother of Dwayne Bravo, who had featured in the games against India, and all-rounders Darren Sammy and David Bernard have also been left out. Pace bowler Fidel Edwards is injured.

Barath, who scored 132 against England for West Indies A in January and enjoyed an excellent domestic season for Trinidad and Tobago, had been tipped for a call-up and should have a chance to stake a claim as the opening partner for skipper Chris Gayle.

West Indies squad: Chris Gayle (Captain), Denesh Ramdin (Vice Captain), Adrian Barath, Dwayne Bravo, Sulieman Benn, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Runako Morton, Brendan Nash, Ravi Rampaul, Andrew Richardson, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor.
