Opener Aaron Redmond scored a well-made 83 as New Zealand [Images] ended the opening day at a score of 262 for the loss of 6 wickets in the second Test against Australia [Images] in Adelaide on Friday.

Lower-order batsmen Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori [Images] were unbeaten on 30 and 12 respectively at the end of the day.

Winning the toss, New Zealand opted to bat first. Openers Redmond and Jamie How (16) shared a first wicket partnership of 46 runs before How was dismissed by paceman Mitchell Johnson [Images] in the 17th over.

How tried to cut a delivery that was bowled way outside the off-stump only to make contact on the toe edge of the bat and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin took an easy catch to end his innings.

Jesse Ryder then gave Redmond good support as the two batsmen shared 55 runs amongst them.

Ryder (13) was sent back to the pavilion by Nathan Hauritz in the 28th over, when Michael Clarke [Images] at short mid-wicket pulled off a brilliant catch.

Redmond was the third wicket to fall as the batsman went for a huge heave towards the mid-wicket boundary. Redmond had earlier hit two sixes in that region but was unlucky this time around as Andrew Symonds [Images] took the catch.

Symonds struck just before tea as he dismissed Peter Fulton for 29. Simon Katich, at short mid-wicket, jumped to his right and took a nice catch.

Taylor missed the opportunity to score his seventh ODI hundred as he was dismissed LBW on 44 by paceman Stuart Clark. Umpire Rudi Koertzen [Images] gave the decision in favour of the bowler but TV replays later suggested that the ball had hit the pads a little too high.

Pace spearhead Brett Lee [Images] picked a wicket, that of Daniel Flynn (11) in the 69th over. Lee, from round the wicket, bowled the left-hander with a delivery that pitched on a good length and swung in sharply through the air.

Hauritz was the pick of the bowlers as he picked two wickets while Lee, Clark, Johnson and Symonds claimed one each.

Australia beat New Zealand by 149 runs in the first Test at the Gabba [Images] in Brisbane on Sunday.
